Coopertown Middle School Produces Fifth Grade Published Authors

Ninety-two Coopertown Middle School grade five students are now published authors. They celebrated that fact with family, friends and school staff at an, “Author’s Tea,” on Friday, May 5.  At the event, each student received a hardbound copy of his or her published work of either fiction or non-fiction.

The creation process was a long one, that exposed the students to many new concepts and responsibilities.

Students began the writing process by initially participating in brainstorming sessions to select a subject for their story.  After deciding their subject, each student then developed a character map, settings map, and plot map to frame their story and characters in a particular setting and character.

In the next step of development, students created a storyboard with text and illustrations in order to begin the process of actually putting their thoughts onto paper.  No student was allowed to continue past the storyboard stage without approval from his or her teacher.

Rough drafts were the next stage and each student spent a great deal of time editing and finalizing those copies before submitting them for review.  Once all was satisfactory, the final version was printed onto special paper before being sent off for binding.

The tea on Friday provided the setting where both students and supporters alike, saw the published, hardbound books, for the first time.  Teachers handed out the finished works individually and provided special recognition to each author.

Fifth-grade teacher Diane Trescott used the idea in her classroom last year, where it was such a hit that it was turned into an equally successful grade-wide project.
